The Global Game Jam is a 48-hour long event that brings together artists, designers, musicians, engineers, programmers and writers to join a global community of game-makers for a weekend of creative expression and play. It is a unique opportunity to make a game (digital or otherwise) alongside thousands of other jammers around the world. The Global Game Jam is coordinated by a non-profit that sets a basic theme and structure for the jam, but each location has a great deal of control over how the jam plays out. It is the largest sustained game making event in the world. In 2018 over 109 countries participated, on seven continents. Over 4,200 participants made over 7,500 games in 48 hours. UCI participated in 2018 as the 3rd largest jam site in California (and the 37th largest in the world out of 804 jam sites), with over 140 people involved in creating 27 games in a single weekend.
The GGJ at UCI is unique because we have so many professional game developers in the surrounding community. This means that UCI students get a chance to work with seasoned veterans of the video game industry, in teams of 4-7 people. Game design is a truly interdisciplinary practice that involves expertise in art, sound, music, programming, psychology, business, and writing: our game jam has always sought to be an inclusive space where anyone can learn how to make a game and contribute to a team, regardless of experience, ability, or background.
Held annually in Donald Bren Hall, the GGJ welcomes anyone interested in games to participate, regardless of technical expertise or gaming experience. The GGJ at UCI is held in partnership with the UCI Video Game Development Club, the Transformative Play Lab, the Orange County chapter of the International Game Development Association, and UCI Illuminations.
