My Cultural Lens: Life As A Global Black Female Vocal Improviser

My Cultural Lens: life as a global black female vocal improviser

Brooklyn Sound Artist & Educator Fay Victor will give a talk around her work as an African-American/Caribbean artist articulating the experience of living NOW in the USA as a black female artist. Victor's vocal work incorporates her compositions, lyrics and free improvisation coming through a positively expressive lens of black female empowerment, encouraging confidence in using language and the voice itself. Victor sees her work as part of a continuum of female artists of color working in jazz & improvised music that have used their platform to foster discussion and create change. To that end, Victor has run the TalkRACE Forum since 2014, a 'safe-space' meeting place for uncomfortable conversations around race. Victor is also a member of the We Have Voice Collective. The 14 member Collective launched a Code of Conduct for the Performing Arts in May 2018.  The Collective collaborated over many months to create the document that to date has been adopted by over 48 institutions.

Some press quotes:

"She’s essentially invented her own hybrid of song and spoken word, a scat style for today’s avant-garde.” - The New York Times

“If you have never seen her perform live, she is joy incarnate. She scats, she wails, coos, squalls, caresses, plays with words as if writing a play on stage, and does so with a twinkle in her eye. One can hear influences ranging from Nina Simone to Frank Zappa to Bill Dixon to Jimi Hendrix in her music.
